Cooperating Teachers

Cooperating teachers are experienced TEAM (Teacher Education and Mentoring) trained classroom educators who host and mentor teacher candidates during their field experience and student teaching placements.

We are deeply grateful to our cooperating teachers for their partnership and commitment to mentoring the next generation of educators. Their support, expertise, and willingness to open their classrooms provide invaluable learning experiences for our teacher candidates. Cooperating teachers provide daily guidance, model effective teaching practices, and support students as they develop the knowledge, skills, dispositions, and confidence needed for the teaching profession.

In appreciation of their partnership, cooperating teachers receive a stipend. Stipend payments are processed annually in June following the successful completion of the student teaching semester and receipt of a W9 form.

Role of the Cooperating Teacher

Cooperating teachers support students by:

• Building a positive professional relationship
• Welcoming students into the classroom and school community
• Establishing regular communication and clear expectations
• Reviewing lesson plans and providing constructive feedback
• Observing instruction and guiding reflection for growth
• Sharing effective teaching, curriculum, and classroom management practices
• Supporting goal-setting and increasing responsibility over time
• Collaborating with the university supervisor to ensure a successful placement
• Including students in professional meetings and learning opportunities

Observation of the cooperating teacher during the introductory phase is a critical learning experience. By observing classroom routines, instructional moves, and classroom management strategies, students gain valuable insight that help build confidence and ease the transition into teaching.
