Important F-1/J-1 Update: Fixed Period of Admission

Effective September 15, 2026

Beginning September 15, 2026, individuals in F-1 and J-1 status will no longer be admitted for “Duration of Status” (D/S). Instead, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will assign a specific period of authorized stay.

International Student & Scholar Services (ISSS) is reviewing the new regulations and their potential impact on university processes. In the coming weeks, ISSS will offer individual advising appointments for individuals in F-1 or J-1 status to discuss how the rule may affect their immigration status, academic or program plans, and future immigration benefits.

What You Need to Know

Do Not Make Changes Without Speaking to ISSS First

This includes:

  • Making other changes that could affect your period of admission or immigration status

These actions may have important immigration consequences under the new rule.
