UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Southern Italy

This upcoming summer, Central offers the opportunity to study abroad in Salerno, Italy, a charming coastal city located on the Gulf of Salerno in the Campania region and neighboring the world-famous Amalfi Coast. Students will experience this coastal region of southern Italy through its art, history, and cuisine while also enjoying the beautiful beaches and harbors of the Amalfi Coast in a traditional and authentic setting.

Participants are placed in small study groups at the Accademia Italiana Salerno and attend an intensive Italian language course designed to help them learn the everyday language needed to interact with locals and adapt to Italian culture beyond the classroom. The language course is complemented by a variety of high-impact leisure activities, including excursions, tours, museum visits, and recreational events throughout the three-week program.

Students will enjoy guided tours of Salerno’s quaint historic district and Naples’ bustling neighborhoods; travel by ferry to picturesque seaside towns along the Amalfi Coast, such as Amalfi, Positano, and Vietri sul Mare; and explore the archaeological sites of the ancient cities of Pompeii and Paestum. They will also visit a number of Campania’s most significant historic landmarks, including the Cathedral of San Gennaro in Naples, the Duomo of Salerno, Arechi Castle, the Duomo of Amalfi, the Royal Palace of Caserta, and many others. Students will also have leisure time for beach days and relaxation along the Amalfi Coast.

This course offers students an opportunity to experience Italy firsthand through Salerno, the Amalfi Coast, and the surrounding Campania region. Participants will develop their language skills, visit some of the region’s world-famous UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and enjoy its renowned local cuisine—fresh seafood, artisanal cheeses and cured meats, Neapolitan pizza, and more—at many of its excellent trattorias and pizzerias. The course promises an unforgettable experience that is culturally enriching, intellectually engaging, and thoroughly enjoyable.
