Academic departments may host international scholars at Central through the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program for temporary research, teaching, collaboration, and other approved academic activities. These visits promote academic and cultural exchange between visiting scholars and the Central community.
The sponsoring academic department is responsible for initiating the J-1 request. Scholars interested in visiting Central should first contact the appropriate Department Chair.
Application for all visiting scholars for the Fall semester is due by February 1, and those for the Spring semester is due by July 1.

Preparing to Host
Before initiating a request, the host faculty member should consult with International Student & Scholar Services (ISSS) for general guidance on the J-1 Scholar process and discuss the proposed visit with the Department Chair, including the scholar's planned activities, responsibilities, and any resources needed during the visit.
Submitting the Request
Once the department approves the proposed visit, the host faculty member should contact their academic dean's office to begin the process. The dean's office will confirm the required documentation and initiate the request.
After Approval
Once all required information and documentation are submitted, the request will move through the Central's review and approval process.
After final approval, the International Student & Scholar Services (ISSS) will issue Form DS-2019 to the scholar. The scholar may enter the United States up to 30 days before the program state date listed on the form.
The host faculty member and visiting scholar will need to provide documentation including an invitation letter, proof of English proficiency, passport and degree documentation, evidence of financial support, health insurance, and a Statement of Primary Purpose.

Verification of financial support is required. Funding may be from the University, the exchange visitor's government, personal funds or a combination of all of the above.
J-1 scholars and their dependents are required to maintain health insurance that meets the required levels of health coverage, medical evacuation, and repatriation.
Failure to obtain the required health insurance coverage will result in loss of legal nonimmigrant status.
Appropriate health insurance may be purchased through Central upon arrival in the United States. Review Mandatory Health Insurance for additional information.
If the request involves a bilateral exchange with a Central partner university, additional requirements apply. Contact ISSS for guidance before proceeding.
