How do I Apply For a Social Security Number (SSN)?

You will need to:

• Be in a valid/lawful F-1 or J-1 visa status
• Have been offered a job on-campus
• Access Employment Verification Form at https://ccsu.edu/isss/forms:
  • Have your employer complete and sign the form
  • Submit the signed form to ISSS@ccsu.edu, or drop it off at ISSS Office (Henry Barnard Hall, Room 406)
• Wait to be notified when the Employment Verification Form has been authorized by ISSS and ready for pick up along with a Letter of Good Standing. Submit both as part of your application for Social Security Number.
• Apply for your Social Security Number online and secure an in-person appointment at the local New Britain Office: https://www.ssa.gov/number-card/request-number-first-time.

Documents to bring for your appointment:

• Valid Passport
• Valid Form I-20 or DS-2019
• Most Recent I-94 record
• The Employment Verification Form with ISSS authorization
• Letter of Good Standing from ISSS Office.
• Any other document requested in your online application

Keep your SSN application receipt for your records.

Once approved, an official Social Security Card will be mailed to your address usually within 2 weeks.
