Central to Conducting High-Impact Research.

CCSU’s BS in Biomolecular Sciences prepares students for careers in biomedical research and for health professions. Coursework focuses on molecular biology, cell biology, genetics, microbiology, developmental biology, physiology, and current advances in biomedical research.

At the core of the program is student-centered research. These faculty mentored projects provide students with critical experience desired by employers and for admissions to graduate programs in the health professions and biomedical science.

Graduates of CCSU’s BS in Biomolecular Science go on to careers in the biomedical, pharmaceutical, biotech, and research industries. Following graduation, many CCSU Biomolecular Science students further their education in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and veterinary medicine, become physician’s assistants or physical therapists, or enroll in accelerated nursing programs. Graduates are well equipped to pursue Masters and Doctoral programs in Biomedical Science.

  • Fluorescent microscopes, Real-time PCR machine

Program Features

  • Students engage in research projects with BMS faculty
  • Includes all pre-requisites needed for application to medical, dental, pharmacy, physician’s assistant programs, as well as other health related programs

Overall, my decision to attend CCSU was one of the best decisions of my life. I had an excellent educational experience that equipped me for my PhD training and was the springboard to the life I currently have and love. Also, I met the best people there who have truly impacted my life, many of whom are faculty at CCSU and who I am so grateful to have encountered on this journey.

Did You Know?

As members of the Biology Club or the PreHealth Club students travel to regional and national research conferences, receive departmental honors, form an active network of BMS alumni, and pursue grant funding for student projects.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Biomolecular Sciences majors will be able to demonstrate foundational knowledge in Biomolecular science, including an understanding of:
    • The relationship between the properties of macromolecules and cellular activities,
    • The relationship between cellular activities and biological responses,
    • Cell metabolism, chemical composition, physiochemical and functional organization of organelles,
    • Gene replication, expression, regulation and mutation,
    • Cell signaling, trafficking and differentiation, and
    • Contemporary approaches and techniques used in modern cell and molecular biology.
  2. Biomolecular Sciences majors will be able to evaluate, summarize and critique papers from the scientific literature.
  3. Biomolecular Sciences majors will be able to develop a research question and discuss and evaluate approaches to address that question.
  4. Biomolecular Sciences majors will be able to design and conduct a research project under the guidance of a faculty member, including data collection, evaluation, and presentation in an oral or written format.
