Robotics and Mechatronics Engineering Technology Program Objectives

Mission Statement

The Robotics and Mechatronics Engineering Technology Degree Program prepares graduates for professional careers as engineering technologists. The student shall acquire knowledge in mathematics, physical sciences, mechanics, electronics, data acquisition and processing, strength of materials, design, programming, engineering standards, fluid power, mechanism of automation, control systems, mechatronics, and robotics. The RMET program provides relevant industrial experience within the academic environment to apply theoretical and practical concepts to improve design and application in the field of robotics and mechatronics. The students shall develop writing and communication skills and engineering problem-solving skills and be able to apply these skills to the design, testing and improve a wide variety of components. The program also provides relevant industrial experience via co-op education.

Program Educational Objectives

The Bachelor of Science in Robotics and Mechatronics Engineering Technology (RMET) program at Central Connecticut State University will prepare students for a broad range of professional careers in robotics, mechatronics, automation, and manufacturing. Guided by the Mission of the University and the Mission of the School of Engineering & Technology, the Robotics and Mechatronics Engineering Technology program is committed to preparing students to be thoughtful, responsible, and successful citizens who can meet dynamic engineering and technological challenges as leaders and members of engineering and technical teams.

Program objectives describe the career and professional accomplishments that graduates are prepared to achieve.

  1. Graduates will use the knowledge of fundamental technical sciences integrated with applied technical specialties, such as mechanics, applied control systems, electronics, and will successfully apply analytical techniques and problem-solving skills necessary to adapt to technological changes and for a career within the Robotics and Mechatronics industry.
  2. Graduates will use the academic experience from classroom lectures, demonstrations, experimentation, projects and laboratory, and will apply the in-depth technical knowledge attained in areas such as applied control systems, computer-aided engineering graphics, design, programmable controllers, fluid power, mechanism, automation and robotics.
  3. Graduates will effectively use their communication skills in oral, written, visual and graphic modes within interpersonal, team, and group environments.
  4. Graduates will demonstrate professionalism and ethics, including a commitment to utmost performance quality and timeliness, respect for diversity, and awareness of international issues; and will initiate continuing professional development that demonstrates their commitment to the responsibilities of a contemporary engineering technologist throughout their careers.

Student Learning Outcomes

The student outcomes adopted in Spring 2019 are as follows:

(1) An ability to apply knowledge, techniques, skills and modern tools of mathematics, science, engineering, and technology to solve broadly-defined engineering problems appropriate to the discipline;

(2) An ability to design systems, components, or processes meeting specified needs for broadly-defined engineering problems appropriate to the discipline.

(3) An ability to apply written, oral, and graphical communication in broadly-defined technical and non-technical environments; and an ability to identify and use appropriate technical literature;

(4) An ability to conduct standard tests, measurements, and experiments and to analyze and interpret the results to improve processes; and

(5) An ability to function effectively as a member as well as a leader on technical teams.
