What is the difference between a Graduate Assistantship and a Graduate Internship?
Graduate Assistantships:
- for full-time matriculated students
- limited to 20 hours a week while maintaining a full-time student status
Graduate Internships:
- for part-time status students
- limited to 40 hours a week
Where Do I Search and How Do I Apply for Graduate Assistantships and Internships?
- All Graduate Assistantship and Internship positions are listed on Handshake
and all applicants are encouraged to search and apply directly through the Handshake posting. - Follow the instructions in the posting and send all required application documentation to the respective departmental personnel (should be listed in the posting) for review.
Requirements
All applicants must meet the following requirements to be considered:
- Matriculated in a graduate program
- Registered in the current semester
- Maintaining a GPA of 3.00 or higher
- Full-time at least nine credits (if applying to a Graduate Assistantship)
- Part-time at least three credits (if applying to a Graduate Internship)
Duties/Hours Required
- Part-time Graduate Assistant must complete 10 hrs/week or 150 hrs/semester
- Full-time Graduate Assistant must complete 20 hrs/week or 300 hrs/semester
- Full-time Graduate Internship must complete 35+ hrs/week; total semester hour requirement varies
- Assignments begin the first week of each semester and continue through to the end of the semester.
Graduate Studies Policy Regarding GA and GI Positions
- May not be employed in any other employment category by the university
- Full-time Graduate Interns as well as part-time GA’s should not be engaged in significant
employment
