James Joyce epitomizes this characteristic high modernist attitude to religion in his scathing representation of the Jesuits who educated him in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.Joyce's bildungsroman culminates, in fact, in the protagonist's complete renunciation of religion in favor of art: religion in Ireland was a "net flung at [the soul] to hold it back from flight," a net that he was determined to fly past. Not only Joyce, but also Virginia Woolf was profoundly secularist, writing of the First World War's disenchanting effect on the culture, which had thoroughly extinguished religious as well as romantic sensibilities. Her Bloomsbury associate, Lytton Strachey, took direct derisive aim at religious figures in his quartet of short biographies, Eminent Victorians. Cultural disenchantment and scientific skepticism aligned to produce the notion that theistic belief was, as Freud famously called it, "an illusion." Of modernism's many features, secularism is perhaps the most obvious to the point that it is simply taken for granted by many scholars, and this disregard for the role of religion in shaping the modernist canon continues to this day.
This view of modernists' attitude towards religion is an incomplete and tendentious one. Even the most irreligious canonical writes exhibit forms of engagement with religious motifs, narratives, modes, and structures, such as Joyce's quasi-religious "epiphanies" and Woolf's visionary "moments of being." Other modernist writers produced nuanced subversions and critiques of religious orthodoxy, whether through blasphemous revision, syncretism, mythopoesis, or by supplanting religion with aesthetics. And at the opposite end of the spectrum from complete secularist dismissal of religion, many modernists actively embraced orthodox forms of religion, creating modernist forms of devotional literature (e.g. T.S. Eliot's Four Quartets and Ash Wednesday and David Jones' Anathemata).
Between the rejection of and the embrace of religion within modernist literature, then, we see an array of intermediate responses and a myriad of formal and stylistic developments to accommodate the challenge of writing about religion in a secularizing culture. We will be asking how this challenge shaped the thematic and formal choices these modernists writers made, as they incorporated into their works the common motifs and structural patterns of epiphany and vision, conversion, redemption, sacrifice, and the dialectic of faith and doubt, as well as many forms traditionally associated with religious writing, such as meditative lyric, ritual drama, prose sermons, liturgical language, prayer, and hagiography. Throughout the course, we will explore this fertile ground of reciprocal interrogation and dialectic in which modernist writers use secularist views (emancipatory feminism, socialism, liberalism, etc.) to critique religion and religious views (orthodox, neopagan, mythopoeic, occult, etc.) to critique secularism.

This course will unfold in two parts. In the first, we'll review the influential theories of Aristotle, Hegel, and Nietzsche (the course title is a play on his Birth of Tragedy), while reading select tragedies from Ancient Greece (Sopholces' Oedipus the King and Antigone and Euripides' The Bacchae) and Early Modern England (Shakespeare's Hamlet and Milton's Samson Agonistes). In the second part, we'll read a series of (mostly) 20th-Century European novels to explore tragedy as a literary "mode" whose diffusion of tragic elements is itself reflective of social forces associated with modernity (Flaubert, Madame Bovary; James, Portrait of a Lady; Camus, The Stranger; Rhys, Wide Sargasso Sea; McEwan, Atonement). Additional readings by Benjamin, Lukacs, R Williams, among others.
(Although 598 is a prerequisite for 540, in this case it won't be necessary; let either Dr. Pozorski or Dr. Leonidas know your interest and the prereq will be waived).

American Drama offers a comprehensive survey of American drama over the course of the twentieth century and into the twenty-first. Playwrights studies include Susan Glaspell, Eugene O'Niell, Tennesee Williams, LeRoi Jones, Edward Albee, Sam Shepard, Wendy Wasserstien, and Tony Kushner, among many others. The broader literary periods of realism and naturalism, modernism, social realism, and postmodernism are covered. Each student is expected to respond to each weeks' readings with a short writing assignment designed to promote active reading, give one presentation of a week's readings, write a 7-10 page final research paper, and take a mid-term and final written exam. (Graduate students are required to submit longer papers and presentations, each more focussed on secondary sources.) We also attend at least one live performance at either the Hartford Stage or the Long Wharf Theater.
American Drama is designed to further develop the students' abilities to read, write, and discuss literature with the analytical skill, fluency, and research capabilities of an English major. To facilitate this, we explore the development of American drama over the last century: the alienation and disillusionment caused by World War I and the modern industrial order; the early stylistic developments away from melodrama and romance and toward realism and naturalism; the avant-garde expressionistic developments of the 1920s; and the blend of naturalism and expressionism that ultimately came to define the "American style" of drama. We also cover race relations across the century and into our own time, our nation's increasingly complex gender relations prior to and following the women's suffrage movement, and the influence of America's uniquely diverse racial and ethnic groups on the stage and on the national dialogue writ large.

Traces of postmodernism's assertions about the instability and indeterminacy of language an be found in some of the earliest American short stories. In our exploration of short stories from the mid-19th century through the early 20th century, we will grapple with such equivocal ideas as the reasons behind such duplicity, the elusiveness of objective narration, the deceptiveness of popular myths, and the formation of the modern grotesque. Authors will include Poe, Melville, Twain, Crane, Freeman, Chopin, Gilman, Anderson, Hemingway, and others.

This course will explore the long history of the georgic, and ancient poetic genre rooted in didactic farming literature, that later writers would adapt to engage and critique their contemporary literary, political, philosophical, and even musical worlds. Among the artists whose georgic works will be explored are Hesiod, Vergil, Rafael Landivar, Willa Cather, Mariko Nagai, and John Mellencamp.

The word "lyric" has followed a complex path of historical evolution to become a label for the most broadly inclusive category of poetry. The characteristics most frequently associated with the modern lyric-intense subjectivity, emotion, and an imaginative response to the world-are also those essential to the pose of the "romantic artist." In this ENG 522 course, we'll consider lyric poetry of the British Romantic Period (the late 1700's through the 1820's).
Provisionally, we'll subdivide lyric response in terms of the sensual, the imaginative, and the mystical. We'll take the self-consciously formal approach to the poetry, one which emphasizes close reading and focuses on the analysis of figurative language and structural features such as rhyme and meter. We'll consider durable lyrical forms such as the ballad, the sonnet, and the ode, as well as romantic inventions such as the conversation poem. Among the poets we'll consider are Burns, Blake, Wordsworth, Shelley, and Keats.

The American Family Drama (ENG 500) offers a comprehensive survey of the predominant role of family dynamics in American drama from the mid-twentieth century into the twenty-first. Through the lens of familial relations, we will cover how dramatic techniques interrogate and amplify our nation's perpetually complex ethnicity, race, gender, and class relations on the national dialogue writ large. Playwrights studied will include Susan Glaspell, Eugene O'Niell, Tennessee Williams, Lorraine Hansberry, Edward Albee, August Wilson, Sam Shepard, Paula Vogel, and Nilo Cruz, among many others.

Jane Austen is becoming increasingly institutionalized. The burgeoning Austen industry includes films and television adaptations of her novels; Austen-themed balls; Austen guides to dating, and, of course, coffee mugs and t-shirts bearing her sentences. But as her popularity increases, critical consensus on what her novels mean becomes ever more difficult to achieve. This class does not aim to arrive at a single understanding of Austen but rather, though close reading, lecture and discussion, reveal how complex and elusive her texts are. Particular attention is paid to Austen's relationship to genres other than the novel, to the non-marital (born out of wedlock or never-married) characters in her fiction, and to her satirical techniques. The class includes a small selection of juvenilia and four novels.

ENG 540 will focus on literature about race and identity with the purpose of learning and applying the methods outlined in Krista Ratcliffe’s Rhetorical Listening: Identification, Gender, Whiteness. Rhetorical listening is an approach to identity and cultural conflicts that aims to disrupt gender, race, and sight biases and offer rhetorical listeners distinctive understandings of these conflicts. Rhetorical listening also challenges conventional beliefs about reading. In this class, students will have the opportunity to learn, apply, and critique rhetorical listening. Students will analyze how specific reading lenses influence what they can hear.

This required seminar for the MA in English introduces students to the methods and procedures of graduate research in literary studies. We will approach “research in English” as a journey into a longstanding and very complex conversation that involves several topics, including (but not limited to) literary theory, finding information about specific texts, and presenting arguments. We will explore an exciting constellation of theoretical movements and critical practices, with an especial focus on those frameworks that students will encounter, use, and develop throughout their graduate studies and research. To ground our understanding of those theoretical frameworks, we will read short literary texts and explore how our interpretation of those texts changes as we view them through different theoretical perspectives. To develop students’ research skills, we will cover citation and reference management (with a focus on Zotero); online databases and resources; as well as that very old-fashioned, but still quite beneficial skill, navigating Central’s Burritt Library and its Library of Congress cataloging system. Students will apply their analytical and research skills in a term-long project, which includes an annotated bibliography, multiple progress reports, and a 10-page essay explicating a literary text (or facet of that text) via theoretical and secondary sources (carefully selected in consultation with the professor). The course’s seminar format depends upon students completing the readings and coming to class prepared to discuss their reactions, pose nagging questions, and draw insightful connections with readings (from this course and beyond). To facilitate this preparation, students will submit short weekly analyses of the reading assignments.

The antebellum period in American literary history is commonly regarded as the bastion of transcendentalism, and the writers associated with this movement include Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, and others. But the transcendentalists did have their detractors, such as Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville, and Edgar Allan Poe, among others. This course will entail platting-out the broader context of transcendentalism, which will include many works by other key players; it will also give close attention to the movement’s detractors and focus on the eventual dissolution of the movement by 1860.

Our goals in this course are threefold. First, as our title suggests, we will explore Shakespeare’s plays not simply as individual works, but as examples of a literary form, or genre–in this case, romantic comedy. We will develop a model of Shakespearean romantic comedy that will allow us to determine which of the genre’s characteristics the individual plays present, which they do not, and–most importantly–why they do or do not, and to what effect. Second, we will investigate the plays’ historical contexts: the social, political and legal events and situations in early modern England that influenced the plays, and which the plays in turn may themselves have attempted to influence. Finally, we will try to bring these two approaches together, exploring how contemporary circumstances might have shaped not only individual plays, but literary forms as well, asking which cultural needs the genre of romantic comedy might be responding to and what it might have to say to or about Shakespeare’s England.

American Canons and Cultures will consider the very category of canon itself, as it invites students to read, among a variety of other texts, nineteenth-century American short stories and twentieth-century American poetry to determine the qualities of “canonical” American literature. The course is directed toward current teachers of American literature but is open to all who share a passion for conversations about inclusion, diversity, tradition, culture, and the canon.

Reading major works by Shakespeare, M Shelley, and Orwell, we’ll seek to find sophisticated yet accessible ways to present and discuss canonical texts. We’ll also review some of the critical debates surrounding these works, debates not only over content but also over their place in a broader curriculum. And we’ll explore the extent to which “old” texts can address seemingly contemporary cultural issues, or whether these are better approached through more recent and diverse British writers.

The American literary canon has been the subject of intense critical debate for the last several decades. From close critical readings in early and recent theories of canon-making in American literary history, we will grapple with such deceptively simple terms as "American," "literary," and "canon," in light of works of fiction, which will be thematically paired off according to their canonical and non-canonical status. At the conclusion of the course, I hope you will understand why some primary texts have "always" been in the canon, why others fade into obscurity, and why others emerge from obscurity into prominence; moreover, I hope you will become aware of the contentious theoretical and political struggles that lie behind the neatly packaged covers of American literary histories and anthologies. Authors will include Willa Cather, William Faulkner, Fanny Fern, Hannah Webster Foster, Michael Gold, Nella Larsen, Herman Melville, & others.

Gothic fiction, with its subterranean passageways and restless spirits, has thrilled readers for centuries while engaging them in debates about power, gender, race, and justice. Whereas gothic novels of the late eighteenth century featured the eerie enclosures of medieval monasteries and southern ancestral homes, which served as sites of displaced social critique, gothic fiction since the Victorian age has focused its tales of terror mainly on the seemingly medieval horrors of the present. The eruption of archaic fears in the middle of modern narratives lends gothic fiction its unique power and timely message that perhaps the world we live in may not be as modern as we thought. Selected readings may include Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights, Sheridan Le Fanu’s Carmilla, and Bram Stoker’s Dracula, as well as contemporary neo-gothic novels like Helen Oyeyemi’s White is for Witching and Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s Mexican Gothic.

This course provides students the opportunity to engage with world literature and visual media from a variety of global cultures in understanding how gender and sexual identities are conceptualized, represented, and practiced in diverse countries from around the world. How do different global cultural understandings of gender and sexuality, particularly from the non-west, help us to explore what it means to be “queer”? In what ways have colonialism and imperialism led to the suppression and erasure of non-heteronormative gender and sexual identities that existed prior to colonialism? To what extent are our current understandings of gender and sexual identity a product of a normative neocolonial epistemology? These are some of the questions that this course will try to address by engaging with texts from world literature, film, and graphic novels that showcase a wide spectrum of global gender and sexual identities.

This course will explore how The Tempest, one of Shakespeare’s most popular and controversial plays, has resonated through our literary and cultural history and continues to shape the way we think about such important matters as gender, race, and (post)colonialism. In addition to a careful reading of the play itself, we will look at some early modern texts that will help us situate The Tempest in the political, economic, and philosophical debates of its time. We will also explore a series of responses and adaptations in various media that show how the play has been understood, disputed, appropriated, and otherwise put to use, primarily in the twentieth century. We will be assisted by a sampling of critical articles, and students will be encouraged to further explore the play’s legacy in an area of their choosing. Selected materials in addition to Shakespeare’s play and its contexts may include works by Michel de Montaigne, Aimé Césaire, Julie Taymor, Derek Jarman, and Peter Greenaway, among others.

Gwendolyn Brooks offers us ideal opportunities to enrich our understanding of poetics and prosody through her poetry and prose. And because she merged questions of poetics with questions of prejudice and privilege we can situate her formal choices in a landscape where multiple campaigns for civil rights, women’s rights, and cultural agency were fought at crucial stages of Brooks’s career. We’ll survey Brooks’s works from her first volume, A Street in Bronzeville (1945), through works affiliated with the Black Arts movement and her works for children and beyond to her work in the 1980s-1990s as poet laureate and commentator on a national and international stage. We’ll look, in particular, at her creation of forms such as the “sonnet-ballad” and “verse journalism” and at a new form, the “golden shovel” poem, created by contemporary poets to honor Brooks’s most famous poem, “We Real Cool.” We’ll listen to recordings across several decades to hear and appraise Brooks’s evolving performance styles and their musical underpinnings. And we’ll read her semi- autobiographical novel, Maud Martha, for its cadences and content. Though Brooks’s formal choices are key to our study of poetics and prosody, we will also consider her work in the context of Brooks’s life and reception; her views on race and gender, racism and identity, art, childhood, apartheid, and war; the historical events and cultural forces that inform her work; the generations of writers she influenced, and the American landscape she described and shaped.
