The LALCC will host a special discussion with Dr. Alejandro Velasco, associate professor of Latin American History at New York University. Dr. Velasco will present a talk titled “Crude Tactics: Venezuela, the U.S., and the Future of Resource Sovereignty in the Americas.”
Dr. Velasco’s research focuses on social movements, urban politics, and democratization in Latin America. His award-winning book, "Barrio Rising: Urban Popular Politics and the Making of Modern Venezuela," received the 2016 Fernando Coronil Prize for the best book on Venezuela from the Latin American Studies Association.
At NYU, Dr. Velasco teaches interdisciplinary courses on contemporary Latin America, including seminars on human rights, cultural studies, and urban social movements. His teaching also includes courses on 20th-century revolutions, urban political history, and oral history.
