Daquan Carr of New Britain, a student at Central Connecticut State University has been honored by the Alma Exley Scholarship Program, which promotes diversity in the teaching profession. The scholarship honors the legacy of the late Alma Exley, who led an effort at the State Department of Education to bring more people of color into the teaching profession in the state.
Carr holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science and a Master of Science degree in Physical Education with a specialization in Exercise Science, both from Central. He is enrolled in a post-baccalaureate, teacher-certification program at the university. He is a graduate of the Sport and Medical Sciences Academy, a regional public school in Hartford.
The Community Foundation of Greater New Britain has managed the scholarship program for 30 years, helping to launch the careers of 42 future educators. The program annually awards one scholarship of at least $5,000 to a student of color in an accredited teacher-preparation program in Connecticut.
