What is Narrative Nonfiction?
Fact-based stories can be just as riveting as good fiction if you know how to use a range of writing techniques to build a good narrative. The narrative nonfiction courses, which include Level I, II, and III workshops as well as Essay, Writing About Special Topics, Travel Writing and more, focus on finding fresh angles, developing voice, using research creatively and connecting your life experiences to the larger world. Many of the courses also have a community engagement component. Past classes have worked with Vietnam Veterans, inner city middle school children, and the elderly to produce magazines and even traveling exhibits. Professor Mary Collins won the top award for Community Engaged College Educators in 2015 from a consortium of universities in the state for her creative projects in her nonfiction courses.
