Explore Biology at Central
Welcome to the Central Biology undergraduate programs, where you can dive deep into your passions and define your future. At Central Biology you’ll join one of six exciting pathways—the 1) General Biology, 2) Human Biology, 3) Environmental Science, 4)Ecology, Biodiversity & Evolutionary Biology, 5) Wildlife and Conservation Biology, or 6) one of our teaching-focused tracks—all designed to help you understand and interpret the living world and thrive in your chosen field.
Learn by Doing
You’ll learn in hands-on, student-centered small classes using modern labs and equipment—from molecular biology and neurobiology to microscopy, water quality testing, plant and algal culture, and wildlife ecology. Your learning may lead to presenting research at local, regional, or national conferences, and possibly even coauthoring publications with faculty mentors.
Research and Internships
As a student, you can expect to complete a meaningful research project with faculty or gain real world experience through internships—many students choose both. Graduates go on to careers as biologists, ecologists, veterinarians, doctors, teachers, marine biologists, research associates, and more.
Support and Flexibility
Our programs offer flexibility to study full or part-time, with resources like financial aid, scholarships, and even free on campus childcare. Central has the largest Science Department in the CSCU system, giving you more choices, opportunities, and pathways to pursue the biology career you envision.
Degree Pathways
Want to get a clearer idea of each pathway?
- General Biology explores life from molecules to ecosystems, building a deep appreciation for diversity and evolution.
- Human Biology focuses on anatomy, physiology, reproduction, disease, nutrition, neurology, endocrinology—perfect if you’re preparing for medical or health related professions, or research.
- Environmental Science blends organismal biology with ecology, environmental chemistry, earth science, and environmental management—especially strong in freshwater and marine ecology.
- Ecology, Biodiversity & Evolutionary Biology digs into relationships among organisms, evolutionary processes, and ecological interactions, preparing you for careers in conservation, wildlife management, environmental education, or research.
- Wildlife and Conservation Biology prepares students for careers in conservation, ecology, and natural resource management through hands-on research, internships, and training that qualifies graduates for certification as Associate Wildlife Biologists.
- Teaching-Focused pathways prepare you for careers in elementary or secondary science or biology education, offering depth in biological concepts with added professional education training.
Skills for the Future
Each path equips you with essential skills in communicating biological content, critically analyzing research, using scientific tools, and understanding the social and ethical dimensions of science.
