Hoops for Homeless nets two grants for New Britain students

Dr. Jacob Werblow, a professor at Central Connecticut State University’s Educational Leadership program, recently secured two $500 grants for Hoops for Homeless, a charity organization he co-founded that raises funds and awareness for homeless youth and families in New Britain. The grants were funded by the Petit Family Foundation and Community Foundation of Greater New Britain.

According to Dr. Werblow, Hoops for Homeless originated as a basketball tournament to unite the downtown New Britain community. He and co-founder Paul Zagorsky, his friend and a local attorney, observed how little people were outside walking around. They envisioned creating an event that would serve a greater purpose beyond recreation.

“We asked ourselves, ‘What would be a cause that would cross political ideologies? What would be a cause that even the Grinch could not show compassion towards?’” Werblow explained.

They named homelessness affecting local children and families as their focus, and through collaboration with area organizations and community outreach, Hoops for Homeless was established.

The grant money, according to Werblow, will fund scholarships for graduating New Britain High School students who are college bound and experienced homelessness. Additionally, some of the funds will help to provide health and school supplies for students in need. These resources help ensure that students have the tools necessary to succeed academically while addressing immediate health and wellness needs.
