Alumni Spotlight: Scott Pioli ’88 – Leading with Heart and a Commitment to Community
Scott Pioli’s name is synonymous with football excellence – and with giving back to the communities and causes that matter most to him. A veteran NFL executive, Pioli has built an award-winning career while staying deeply connected to his alma mater.
Pioli played football for Central from 1983 to 1987, graduating that year with a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication. On the field, he was a three-time All-New England selection, the 1985 Defensive MVP, and the first-ever recipient of the Frank Marietta Award for leadership. He finished his collegiate career with 222 tackles and 22 sacks, cementing his place in Blue Devils history. After graduation, he spent four years coaching collegiate football, shaping the next generation of players.
His accomplishments have been celebrated at Central for decades. In 2005, he was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame. He was also honored as a member of the Alumni Circle of Inspiration in both 2013 and 2025.
Pioli’s professional football career is equally storied. As Vice President of Player Personnel for the New England Patriots, he helped lead the team to three Super Bowl championships in four years. He later served as General Manager of the Kansas City Chiefs and held senior leadership roles with the Atlanta Falcons and Cleveland Browns. His skill and vision earned him recognition as a two-time NFL Executive of the Year by The Sporting News and the 2004 JB (James Brown) Award for Executive Leadership by Fox Sports and the NFL Players Association.
“Central gave me so much more than an education—it gave me lifelong friendships, a sense of purpose, and the confidence to pursue my dreams,” Pioli reflects. “This university shaped who I am, and I’m proud to carry its values with me everywhere I go.”
As the Founding Donor and Founding Chair of Central’s John Lewis Institute for Social Justice, Pioli has helped lay the foundation for a program that inspires students to be agents of positive change. His philanthropic legacy includes the Scott Pioli Football Enrichment Fund, which enhances opportunities for the Blue Devils football program, and the Scott R. Pioli Family Fund, which supports the work of the John Lewis Institute.
“Giving back to Central isn’t just a choice, it’s a responsibility,” he says. “I want to make sure future students have the same opportunities and support that made such a difference in my life.”
Family remains at the center of Pioli’s life. He and his wife, Dallas Pioli, share a daughter, Mia Costa Pioli, and are committed to using their platform to promote education and opportunity.
Whether on the field or in the community, Pioli’s leadership reflects the values he champions – hard work, integrity, and the responsibility to lift others as you climb. His enduring partnership with Central ensures that future generations will have the tools to achieve, lead, and serve.
