Lecture: The Teaching of History & the Politics of Forgetting in Puerto Rico

Guest speaker Dr. Jorell Meléndez-Badillo will present “The Teaching of History & the Politics of Forgetting in Puerto Rico,” at 3 p.m. The lecture will consider how education, politics, and colonialism shape which stories have been told and forgotten throughout Puerto Rican history.

Dr. Melendez-Badillo is an assistant professor of Latin American and Caribbean History at the University of Wisconsin. His work focuses on the global circulation of radical ideas from the standpoint of working-class intellectual communities. His most recent book, “Puerto Rico: A National History” offers an accessible introduction to Puerto Rico, its history, and the contemporary political moment. He holds a doctorate in History from the University of Connecticut.
