A group of Central Connecticut State University students recently returned from a two-week study abroad experience in Japan, where they immersed themselves in the country’s rich history, culture, and educational traditions.
The course, Discover Japan: Samurai, Hiroshima, and Hello Kitty, provided History and Education students with a global experiential learning opportunity designed to deepen their understanding of Japanese society while encouraging reflection on their own values, beliefs, and worldviews.
Throughout the trip, students engaged directly with Japanese culture by visiting historic and educational sites, interacting with local residents in Japanese, and observing daily life firsthand. Highlights included a visit to Atsugi City, New Britain’s sister city, where the group met with the mayor, as well as tours of Hiroshima Peace Park, Tokyo University of Agriculture, Obirin Junior and Senior High School, and Tohodai Elementary School. Students also visited Kyoto, the ancient capital of imperial Japan.
