Central earns CFP Board registration for financial planning track

Students with an interest in financial planning can get down to business faster than ever at Central Connecticut State University.

Central recently received approval from the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. (CFP Board) to offer a new Financial Planning concentration. This designation for the School of Business makes Central the first university in Connecticut to offer a CFP Board Registered Program, giving students a direct and accredited path toward Certified Financial Planner (CFP) certification.

This prestigious recognition places Central among more than 200 institutions nationwide that offer 300 CFP Board Registered programs—financial planning education programs that meet rigorous standards set by the CFP Board.

“This prestigious designation recognizes the strength and quality of our finance curriculum in preparing students to meet the rigorous standards required for CFP certification,” said Dr. Lisa Frank, dean of the School of Business at Central. “With this recognition, our students can meet the educational requirement for the CFP exam without the need to take any additional coursework beyond their studies at Central.”

Led by Associate Dean Dr. Dana Wilkie and Dr. Ying Chen, an assistant professor of Finance, the registration process has already sparked interest among students in the School of Business. High school students enrolled in Finance 210—Central’s dual enrollment course—will have the option to get an early start on the financial planning concentration. Through Central’s Dual Enrollment Program, students can earn college credit by attending courses on campus.

Students who complete the program will meet the coursework requirement for CFP certification and be eligible to sit for the CFP certification exam administered by the CFP Board.

The CFP Board is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the financial planning profession through education, ethics, and competency standards. Its Center for Financial Planning also works to expand diversity and access in the field, benefitting the public and strengthening the profession as a whole.
