New campus landmark offers students a place to pause

The freshly installed timber bridge at the Student Center Circle is quickly becoming a popular spot on campus for anyone in need of a moment or two of zen.
Set beside a small pond decked with water lilies and populated by koi fish, the bridge adds structure and style to the Student Center Circle near Memorial Hall. The sound of water splashing into the pond from a small fountain adds a tranquil layer to the overall sensory experience. Even better, the fountain is sustainable and recycles the water it uses.
The new bridge is the eighth constructed by Central students. Led by Engineering Professor Dr. Bin “Brenda” Zhou, the annual bridge project gives students the opportunity to manage a real-world municipal project from design through construction while working with community partners.
A rendering of the bridge was featured on a commemorative coin presented to first-year students during the convocation ceremony on Aug. 24. The bridge will become part of a ceremony for sophomores who have successfully completed their first year and are set to begin the next leg of their college journey.
