Department: World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures

Interests and Hobbies: Professor Rutherford is an adventurer at heart. She loves learning new languages, eating new food, or listening to great music from around the world. While traveling and sailing are two of her favorite hobbies, she's happiest at home with her family, making her favorite recipes and listening to music.

Short Bio: Professor Rutherford teaches Spanish language courses as well as classes on Latin American and Latin-x/-a/-o literature and culture, with a special focus on the Caribbean. Originally from Iowa, Professor Rutherford did her B.A. and her M.A. at the University of Iowa and completed her Ph.D. at The Ohio State University. Today she is a proud Central Blue Devil.

Message to New Students: "Welcome to Central! My name is Professor Rutherford and I will be here to guide and support you through your undergraduate degree. Please reach out to me by email to schedule our first meeting: j.rutherford@ccsu.edu. I look forward to helping you explore all of the opportunities that Central has for our students, what an exciting time!"

Department: New Student Programs

Interests and Hobbies: Family is very important to me and being present in my girls' lives is something that my husband and I make a priority. We enjoy making the most of our weekends with our girls. Some of my favorite things include: cooking & baking, Disney, coffee, chasing sunsets, Jeep rides, and RI waves.

Short Bio: As a first-generation college student myself, I know how scary coming to a new college can be. I am a Hartford native, with parents who immigrated to the US in their early 20s. I have 2 degrees from CCSU, and consider myself a proud Blue Devil! I studied Italian, secondary education, and received my graduate degree in Counseling, with a focus in Student Development in Higher Education. I'm proud to work at Central, with some of the best students- and I love being able to meet them all through Orientation programs hosted through my department.  Being positive and appreciating the little things is something I strive for each and every day.

Message to New Students: Get yourself connected- to a friend, a club, a professor, a mentor- even a spot on campus that you feel comfortable with. Feeling connected will make college feel more like your home away from home, rather than somewhere you only come to take classes. That connection is an important puzzle piece to your success at CCSU.
