Award-winning Connecticut filmmaker Michael T. Lombardi will debut his new 40-minute dramatic short film “Sign Man” in a special one-night-only, benefit screening at Torp Theatre on Thursday, Oct. 16, at 7 p.m.
Presented by the Central Department of Social Work, the event is a partnership between Beacon Trail Studios/MTO Films and Family Promise of Central Connecticut. Proceeds will benefit Family Promise, an organization led by Cheryl Liedke, dedicated to helping families overcome homelessness.
"Sign Man" was filmed entirely in central and southern Connecticut and tells the story of a small town where homeless people mysteriously appear on the streets with hand-painted signs carrying cryptic messages. A local newspaper reporter follows the trail, hoping to uncover the identity of the artist known only as “Sign Man.”
The film features a cast and crew comprised almost entirely of Connecticut talent, including several actors with Down syndrome—a commitment close to Lombardi’s heart. Having an aunt with special needs and serving as a lifelong volunteer with the Special Olympics, Lombardi has long championed authentic inclusion and representation in the arts.
“The message of the film, while inspirational and hopeful, is that none of us is immune to becoming homeless, including those with special needs. In today’s world, all it takes is one unexpected event to alter the course of a life – and that is why the message of this film is so important,” said Lombardi.
Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. There will be a cast meet and greet immediately following the screening. Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door, and $15 for Central students.
