Applying for Admission

For consideration, applicants must submit the following:

  1. A completed online application with supplemental materials (ccsu.edu/apply):
    • Two letters of recommendation that speak to your ability to conduct graduate-level work
    • Two essays describing:
      • Scholarly monograph written by a historian that influenced the way you think about the past (500 words)
      • Your career aspirations and opportunities that inspired you for a career in this field (250 words)
    • $50 application fee
  2. Official undergraduate and graduate transcripts from a regionally accredited institution of higher education (GPA of 3.00 or higher)
    • Bachelor’s in History or related field preferred
    • Applicants with an undergraduate degree in History denied admission because of a GPA between 2.70 and 2.99 may be considered for conditional admission after completing HIST 501 or HIST 502 with a B+ or better
    • Applicants with an undergraduate degree in History denied admission for not meeting GPA requirements for full admission or conditional admission must take 9 credits of 500-level history courses, including HIST 501 or HIST 502, as a non-matriculated student. Applicants must earn a grade of B+ in all 500-level history courses and receive two positive letters of recommendation from CCSU History Department faculty to be considered for admission. Applicants admitted to the program after taking those courses will have those credits applied to the graduate degree
    • Applicants that do not meet the GPA requirements for full admission to the graduate program who also do not have an undergraduate degree in history should meet with the History Department chair or a History Department M.A coordinator to determine the requisite courses needed for admission. At minimum, those students must complete HIST 501 or HIST 502 with a B+ or better to receive conditional admission
