Program Rationale:
The Sixth-Year Certificate in Reading and Language Arts is an advanced degree program with 3 strands of study:
Strand I: Reading Specialist (30 credits). It is designed to prepare teachers to become reading specialists in compliance with the state of Connecticut standards for certification in Remedial Reading and Remedial Language Arts (#102 certification).
Strand II: Literacy Education (30 credits). It is designed to further prepare teachers for teaching reading and language arts to diverse groups of students in a classroom context.
Strand III: Reading Specialist/Language Arts Consultant (33 credits). It is designed to prepare teachers to apply for the Connecticut state endorsements in Remedial Reading and Remedial Language Arts (#102 certification) and Reading and Language Arts Consultant (#097 certification).
Program Learning Outcomes:
The Sixth-Year Certificate in Reading and Language Arts program is aligned with the standards for the Preparation of Literacy Professionals of the International Literacy Association (ILA, 2017). Candidates in the program are expected to:
- Meet the ILA 2017 standards and/or the Connecticut state standards for advanced certifications in reading and language arts.
- Provide leadership, through modeling and mentoring, to ensure that classroom teachers and other support staff acquire a wide range of instructional practices to facilitate their reading and writing instruction.
- Be able to support classroom teachers and other professionals in the selection, administration, interpretation, and sharing of assessment results for student learning.
- Support and mentor classroom teachers and other professionals in creating a literate environment to facilitate successful reading and writing for all children.
- Continue to be lifelong learners and scholars, through reading, research, and professional development.
- Be leaders in planning and implementing professional development programs for teachers and other professionals, as well as in advocating to advance the professional research base to expand knowledge-based practices.
Course Requirements:
The candidate's planned program of graduate study is developed by the candidate and the program advisor. Course requirements will be based on the candidate's needs in terms of fulfilling professional and personal goals. A minimum of 15 credits of 600-level courses is required.
Strand I: Reading Specialist (certification track)(30 credits)
The candidate's planned program of study is a minimum of 30 credits and includes the following required courses:
LLA 502 Developmental Reading in PreK-12 3 Credits
LLA 504 Language Arts for First and Second Language Speakers 3 Credits
LLA 508 Teaching Literacy in the Content Areas 3 Credits
LLA 614 Diagnosis and Intervention of Reading and Language Arts Difficulties I 3 Credits
LLA 616 Diagnosis and Intervention of Reading and Language Arts Difficulties II 3 Credits
LLA 618 Clinical Practices in Literacy and Language Arts 6 Credits
The remaining 6 credits come from reading and language arts courses and are decided in consultation with the program advisor.
Strand II: Literacy Education (30 credits)
The following are required courses:

The remaining 15 credits come from reading and language arts courses and are decided in consultation with the program advisor.
Strand III: Reading Specialist/Language Arts Consultant (certification track)(33 credits)
The strand in Reading Specialist/Language Arts Consultant is a minimum of 33 credits. The following are required courses:

LLA 504 Language Arts for First and Second Language Speakers 3 Credits
LLA 508 Teaching Literacy in the Content Areas 3 Credits
LLA 614 Diagnosis and Intervention of Reading and Language Arts Difficulties I 3 Credits
LLA 616 Diagnosis and Intervention of Reading and Language Arts Difficulties II 3 Credits
LLA 618 Clinical Practices in Literacy and Language Arts 6 Credits
LLA 692 Specialized Diagnosis and Intervention 3 Credits
LLA 624 Practicum for Reading Specialist/Literacy Coach I 3 Credits
LLA 626 Practicum for Reading Specialist/Literacy Coach II 3 Credits
LLA 620 might also be required, if the student has not successfully completed a research course in previous graduate studies.
A course on Children’s or Adolescent Literature and a course on Special Education are also required by the state of Connecticut, if not successfully completed in previous studies.
