Dr. Dena Mortensen is an Assistant Professor of Literacy Central Connecticut State University where she teaches courses on the foundations of reading, Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), and language arts instruction to undergraduate pre-service elementary teachers and graduate students pursuing advanced degrees in reading and language arts. In addition, Dr. Mortensen serves as the Director of the university's Literacy Center, overseeing reading and language arts assessment, diagnosis, and intervention services provided by graduate clinicians to children in the local community - a role she finds deeply rewarding.
With 24 years of experience in K-12 education, Dena has served in various roles, including the Elementary Reading and Language Arts Supervisor for Waterbury Public Schools, the district highlighted in Hopeville: How to Win the Reading Wars, a powerful documentary by Harvey Hubbel V. She has also worked as an elementary vice principal, literacy coach, reading teacher, and classroom teacher. Dr. Mortensen is committed to supporting educators in developing their students as readers.
RESEARCH PROJECTS
Spaced and Interleaved Retrieval Practice: Building Undergraduates’ Content Knowledge for Teaching Elementary Reading. A mixed-methods, quasi-experimental study focused on understanding if spaced and interleaved retrieval activities lead to long-term retention of essential content knowledge required for teaching young children to read. Researcher: Dr. Dena Mortensen.
Higher Ed Instructional Practices and Code Knowledge for Reading. A mixed-methods study that seeks to find learning activities to build teacher candidates’ knowledge of the code, the basis of our language. Researcher: Dr. Dena Mortensen.
READ and Rehearse: An Effective Model for Professional Development in Reading. An action research study on identifying what elementary teachers define as effective professional development using that data to build and test a novel model for professional development in an urban district. Researcher: Dr. Dena Mortensen.
