Who’s Who at the CCSU IRB?
The HSC Administrative Team is comprised of Dr. Brad Waite and Kim DeMichele. The goal of the team is to make engagement with the HSC process as researcher-friendly as possible, while fulfilling the Council’s primary mission of assuring the protection of human research participants.
Brad Waite, PhD, has served as Chair of the HSC since 1990 and fulfills an instrumental role in policy development of the Council and the Human Research Protections Program that supports it. Dr. Waite brings his experience in research and comprehensive knowledge of ethics to the leadership of the Council. Dr. Waite is also a Professor in the Department of Psychology at the university, where he has taught since 1988. A committed educator, Dr. Waite is as committed to the pedagogical role of the HSC as he is to its human protection and regulatory functions. He holds a PhD in Developmental/Experimental Psychology from Kent State University.
Kim DeMichele joined the HSC in January 2011 as Council Administrator and Assistant Director in the Office of Grants and Funded Research (GFR) under GFR Director, Dr. Rod Waterman. As the Administrator of the HSC/IRB, Kim is the primary contact for questions about the HSC.
Kim holds graduate degrees in clinical psychology and business administration. Her previous career in public health administration and contract compliance gives Kim a broad perspective on the arena of research ethics. She knows how confusing HSC requirements can be and strives to make the process as clear and efficient as possible. Kim acts as a liaison between researchers and the HSC members and ensures that protocols uphold federal, state, and institutional rules and regulations. She is available for consultation and training on ethical considerations in developing human subject research protocols.
The HSC administration is also supported by Graduate Assistant, Karen Grudzinskik, who facilitates the submission and approval process.
The administrative team could not do its job without the time and commitment of the members of the full Human Studies Council. Though Council membership varies by academic year, the HSC is always represented by a range of scientific and non-scientific professionals. When necessary the Council seeks outside consultation to inform their review of research that falls outside the range of expertise represented by the membership.
