CCSU: A "Star" in
Teaching Future Teachers

“Colleges and
universities that train
new teachers in
Connecticut are
producing too many
graduates who don't know
how to teach children to
read, according to the
latest results of a
teacher licensing exam.”
There is an exception to
that discouraging
picture: “the star of
the system was
Central Connecticut
State University in
New Britain. At Central,
one of the state's
largest producers of new
teachers, just 58
percent of test-takers
got passing scores on
four separate
administrations of the
exam between May and
November of 2009. The
school responded by
setting up review
sessions, establishing
tutorial programs and
stressing the
significance of the test
to faculty and students.

Professor Gil Gigliotti:
Distinguished Service Award

Many a CCSU alum
has studied with English
professor Gil Gigliotti and
perhaps even listened to his
long-running radio show on Frank Sinatra. It may
come as no surprise that
Professor Gigliotti was honored
with CCSU's Distinguished
Service Award at President Jack
Miller's opening of the academic

CCSU Fall Film Festivals

CCSU is again
offering two hugely popular film
festivals. The Fall 2010 edition
of Classic Fridays
focuses on "the Fourth Estate in
Film," and features classic
films on the press and engaging
introductions by CCSU faculty.

Doris Honig Guenter Women & Film
Festival runs October 26-28
at CCSU and the New Britain
Museum of American Art. The
series is titled Unlocked

The School of Business is offering free Friday afternoon
professional development workshops. The
SPA series (Student Professional
Advancement) is designed to bring
outside resources to the university to
help students and alumni learn from
local employers about the importance of
skills and creating a personal
competitive position to secure
employment. The first session takes
place on September 24. For more

Alumni Legacy Breakfast,
September 25

The Alumni Legacy
Breakfast is an annual event hosted on
Family Day by the CCSU Alumni
Association for current students with an
immediate family member (mother, father,
sister, brother, or grandparent) who
attended or is attending Central. CCSU
legacies will get to meet other legacies
and celebrate this special connection to
the University! Admission is FREE but
RSVP is required. Call 860-832-1740 or

breakfast, beginning at 9:00 am, will be
held in the Connecticut Room of Memorial
Hall. |

BBQ for Classes of 2009 &
2010: September 25
|

Alumni from the classes
of 2009-2010 are invited to a BBQ in
Kaiser Parking Lot on Saturday,
September 25th prior to the football
game between CCSU and Bryant. The BBQ is
free for alumni of these classes as a
welcome to the Alumni Association.
