Department Overview

The Department of Social Work offers a traditional undergraduate program as well as a weekend option, with classes offered on Saturday; both the traditional program and the weekend option are modeled on competency-based education. Program graduates are prepared for beginning generalist social work practice and for acceptance into graduate school. The social work program is accredited at the undergraduate level by the Council on Social Work Education and is a member of Phi Alpha Honor Society, Chapter Chi Upsilon.

The social work weekend option is specifically for employees of Connecticut social service agencies who want to advance their career by completing a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work. To be eligible for the weekend option, prospective students must have already earned a minimum of 30 college credits and must comply with the admissions policy outlined below.

Applying for Admission into the Social Work Program

Applicants seeking admission to the social work program must submit a portfolio for review by the Department of Social Work. Application portfolios are accepted twice a year, October 1 and March 1.

Social work is a field that deals extensively with sensitive social issues and people's personal well-being, and field experiences and volunteer service are required components of many social work courses. Because of the extensive field work that characterizes this program, applicants are carefully evaluated not only academically, but also for their potential professional competence in field experiences.

The admissions process is selective and a limited number of students are admitted each year. Thus, applicants should be aware that acceptance into the University does not guarantee acceptance into the social work program.

Requirements for Admission

The following are requirements for admission to the social work program:

  • A minimum GPA of 2.00 for courses taken at CCSU, as well as an overall GPA of 2.00, which includes both CCSU grades and grades for courses taken at other colleges.
  • A minimum overall GPA of 2.50 for the following introductory SW courses and related requirements: SW 100 or SOC 111; SW 226; SW 227; ANTH 140 or SOC 110; BIO 111 or BMS 111; PS 110 or PS 230; SOC 233; ECON 200; STAT 215. All of these courses must be completed with a minimum grade of C.

Please refer to the Department of Social Work Student Handbook for a comprehensive overview of the application process and policies. It is available online at:

Retention Policy

In accordance with University Academic Standards and Regulations, students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.00 or higher to be in good standing. However, to remain in the social work program, students must maintain a program GPA of at least 2.50 for all social work courses, with no less than a C in each course. In addition, potential for professional skill must be demonstrated in field experiences, which are required in all social work courses. Each semester, the faculty evaluate the student’s academic achievement as well as the student’s performance in the field experience. If a student does not meet academic or professional standards, he or she will be placed on provisional status within the program. Written notification will be given and conditions for full completion of the social work program discussed with the student. Students will be given the opportunity to correct the problem(s); however, if the student does not demonstrate improvement, he or she will not be allowed to complete the program.

Note: This program may undergo revisions in order to comply with national accreditation standards. Students should check with the department chair regarding the possibility of new requirements.
