Music majors must successfully complete all portions of the Sophomore Review given in April of the sophomore year. (For transfer students, or students on an extended schedule, the Sophomore Review should be taken the same semester as MIJS 222 (Theory IV). The Sophomore Review is an assessment tool to aid the student in planning his/ her future. It is intended as a measure for determining whether the student's skills and musical development are sufficient to ensure success in a music career, as well as in advanced music study. The sophomore review consists of four sections: a writing sample, written theory test, sight-singing and aural dictation. If a student fails any portion of the Review, they are allowed to retake that portion again before the end of the semester. The student must begin the piano proficiency examination at the Sophomore Review.
All portions of the Sophomore Review must be passed before students are admitted to any 300 -level music course.
