CCSU Honored for Carpooling
Connecticut honored more than two dozen employers in June for encouraging their workers to carpool as part of the 2010 Earth Day Commuter Challenge, ultimately saving more than $1.1 million in commuting expenses.
Aetna, the insurance company headquartered in Hartford, reduced the most car trips with 24,527. Cartus in Danbury placed second with 16,531 reduced trips, and Travelers Companies, Inc., with major operations in Hartford, placed third with 15,497.
The commuter challenge was the final leg of a year-long state campaign to reduce drive-alone commuting. More than 10,000 participants reduced 227,170 vehicle trips from May 2009 to April 2010.
Among the other employers honored included Central Connecticut State University which received an Honorable Mention with Distinction for its efforts.
