The
Co-op Idea
Cooperative Education is a human resource strategy designed
to provide employers with a structured means of accessing a wealth of employable talent.
Today's college students possess the skills and abilities employers demand in today's
volatile and technically demanding workplace. Through Co-op, employers are able to select
students best suited to fill their needs before those students graduate. Co-op students
are hired on a temporary basis, and tested on the job for a predetermined period of time.
Satisfied employers can either hire these students as permanent employees at a fraction of
the traditional recruitment cost or opt to select another Co-op student.
Since 1973, Central Connecticut State University has conducted a highly successful Co-op
program. It has grown to be the largest program in Connecticut and the second largest in
the Northeast. The University offers such a broad range of majors that we are able to
accommodate the employment needs of virtually every Connecticut employer.

What's in it For You?
Whether your company is among the Fortune 500, a family
owned and operated business, or a social service or non-profit organization, the
advantages that you can gain through participation in Central's Co-op Program are many.
These paraprofessional workers are an excellent resource, generating release time for
professional staff.
Although employers are not required to offer Co-ops permanent employment, 50%-60% of
students do receive such offers. They have proven themselves on the job and hiring is time
and cost efficient. They know the organization and have determined that they wish to
continue the association. Because the initial placement is done carefully, there is far
less turnover of employees who are hired through the Co-op process.
Hiring Co-ops is very cost effective. You are not required to offer Co-op students
employee benefits nor are they eligible for unemployment compensation at the conclusion of
their work block. Unlike other temporary hiring arrangements, there are never any fees or
service charges associated with our program.

Year-Round Coverage
Most employers want their Co-op students for six month
periods. That's how Central's program is designed. There are two work blocks: January-June
and July-December. Before your current Co-op leaves his/her assignment, you've interviewed
and chosen a replacement. Frequently, employers have the incumbent student orient and
train the new student.
Co-op is also an excellent solution if our employment needs are seasonal or if you have
special projects that you'd like to accomplish.

The Kind of Job ---
It's Your
Decision
Two very basic criteria determine the appropriateness of a
Co-op job:
The position should be challenging and provide the student with real responsibility. It
involves "real" work, the kind of work you would have to hire someone to do if
the Co-op student was not there. Co-ops at Central pay a fee, do not receive credit (in
most cases) and frequently delay their graduation in order to participate in the program.
Therefore, it is essential that their Co-op position provides them with a substantial
opportunity for learning.
The position should not require a lengthy training period. The sooner the Co-op employee
becomes productive, the more helpful it will be to your organization.

Spreading the Good Word
About Your
Company
After the work assignment, your Co-op employee goes back to
school "talking up" your organization. You've got a no-cost campus recruiter.
After graduation, that Co-op student's classmates will be knocking on your door. Of
course, you may want more Co-op employees. Because you may find you like the Co-op idea:
the making of a professional . . . your way.

The Hiring Process
Screening candidates for entry level employment can be a
time consuming and frustrating task. Our trained Co-op staff can do this for you. The
process is an efficient one, which results in the hiring of a reliable employee.
First, we meet with you to determine your needs and criteria. We then forward the resumes
of candidates who meet your qualifications. You are not burdened with screening out
inappropriate applicants. Next, you decide who you'd like to interview. If you find a good
match, you make the job offer. You are never under an obligation to hire a student if you
are not comfortable with the choices. We feel confident, however, that we have the
employee you want.
