Newspapers
Newspapers are indexed with four variables.
1. Paid-for dailies: per capita number of titles of paid-for daily newspapers
2. Circulation: per capita number of issues of paid-for daily newspapers printed daily
3. Online editions: per capita number of daily newspapers on the Internet.
4. Export of newspapers: per capita value expressed in USD of all newspapers exported to other countries
Each variable is weighed equally for calculating the score for the categories. The
scores are rank ordered by country.
The evolving role of newspapers is complex. Miller and McKenna (2016) describe their history and tentatively project their future. As they make clear, the transition from print to online formats is far from straightforward and greatly depends on which region of the world one considers.
