International and Area Studies at CCSU

Program Description

International and Area Studies is an interdisciplinary program designed to build student expertise in particular world regions and/or about diverse international issues including globalization; global population, migration, and health; international conflict, terrorism, governance, and law; imperialism, decolonization, and development; and the role of gender, race, and class in international contexts.

A BA or MS degree in International and Area Studies prepares students for a range of career possibilities in government service, in foundations and NGOs, and in the wide range of institutions offering services transnationally or otherwise working in global environments.

CCSU was designated as a Center for Excellence in International Education in 1986. Today, along with its Bachelors and Masters degrees in International and Area Studies, CCSU boasts a wide variety of study abroad programs and initiatives that stretch from one end of the earth to the other. Ghana, Korea, Poland, England, Brazil, and Jamaica are just a few of the countries with whom CCSU maintains close and lasting links. The continuing enrichment, expansion, and refinement of the Bachelor of Arts and Master of Science programs in International and Area Studies result from the institution’s established commitment to global awareness and global citizenship.

Ideally, International and Area Studies majors will spend one academic year abroad at one of over fifty CCSU partner institutions worldwide or in an institution of their own choosing whose program better meets one’s needs. Some students choose to study abroad for shorter periods and students who are unable to complete a study abroad experience can work with their advisor to develop a local multicultural experience related to the students’ academic track or regional specialization.
