Uninstalling Existing Anti-Virus Applications:
You must uninstall any existing anti-virus applications prior to installing McAfee anti-virus. Software conflicts and problems will most likely occur when there are multiple anti-virus programs installed on the same computer. Failure to properly uninstall any other anti-virus applications may result in computer slowdowns, crashes, and more. Please refer to your anti-virus application's user manual for specific uninstallation instructions. For your reference, some common anti-virus applications are:
- Norton AntiVirus (Symantec)
- Avast (ALWIL)
- AVG (Grisoft)
- AntiVir (Avira)
- BitDefender Antivirus
- Trend Micro AntiVirus
- Kapersky Anti-Virus
- Sophos Anti-Virus
- PC Tools AntiVirus
- PC-cillin (Trend Micro)
- Zone Alarm Internet Security
- McAfee Virex (for Mac)
In short, any application including the term "Virus" in its name should be uninstalled prior to installing this version of the McAfee anti-virus. Additionally, application suites such as Norton Internet Security, Norton 360, McAfee Security Center, McAfee Internet Security, and any other similar "Internet Security" applications should be uninstalled as well, as they include anti-virus components and have also been known to cause issues while connecting to the CCSU Residential Networks or the wireless network. To uninstall an application:
- Click on Start (in Windows XP), or the Windows button (in Windows Vista and later versions).
- Click on Control Panel.
- Click on Add/Remove Programs (Windows XP), or Programs: Uninstall Program (in Windows Vista) or Programs and Features (in the Windows Vista "classic view" Control Panel).
- After a few seconds, you will see a list of all the programs installed on your computer. Click on the anti-virus application's name, then click on Remove or Uninstall.
- Restart your computer after the anti-virus application is uninstalled.

Installing the McAfee Anti-Virus:
- Open your web browser and navigate to http://www.ccsu.edu/its/downloads/
- Click on the McAfee 8.7 Enterprise + Spyware Module link. At the login prompt, enter your BlueNet Account username prefixed by the domain (e.g. ccsu_aca_comp\username for students and ccsu_comp_srv\username for faculty/staff) in the username field, then enter your password and click on OK.
- At the 'File Download' prompt, click on Save.
- Click on the down arrow next to Save in and select a location (Desktop is recommended to make the file easier to locate), then click on Save. If you receive an error message that the "publisher is not verified", click on Yes to continue.
- Once the download is complete, locate the downloaded file and double-click on it to start the installation process.
- The Optimizer window will open, displaying a status bar. Please be patient, as this may take a few minutes depending on your system's configuration. Note: If you are upgrading from McAfee 8.0, you may receive a message that the Anti-Spyware Module must be removed, in which case just click on Yes to continue.
- At the 'McAfee® Virus Scan Enterprise Setup' window, Click on Next.
- Read the McAfee® End User License Agreement, click on "I accept the terms in the license agreement", then click on OK.
- From the 'Select Setup Type' screen, click on Typical, and then click on Next.
- For users who are installing McAfee® Virus Scan Enterprise for the FIRST time, select "Standard Protection", then click on Next. For users who are upgrading from an earlier version of McAfee® Virus Scan Enterprise, check the "Preserve Settings" box, and then click on Next.
- From the 'Ready to Install' screen, click on Install. The installation will begin.
- Once the installation is complete, you will receive a confirmation screen indicating that McAfee VirusScan has been successfully installed. From this screen, un-check both "Update Now" and "Run On-Demand Scan", then click Finish. NOTE: If you receive a message with "the network driver is installed but..." click on OK.
- Once McAfee Anti-Virus 8.7 Enterprise finishes installing, the McAfee Anti-Spyware Enterprise Module v8.7 will proceed to install. At the 'McAfee Anti-Spyware Enterprise Module v8.7 Installer' screen, click on Next.
- Read the McAfee® End User License Agreement, click on "I accept the terms in the license agreement", then click on OK. A status bar will appear. Please be patient, as this may take a moment.
- Once the installation is complete, you will receive a confirmation screen indicating that McAfee Anti-Spyware has been installed. Click on Finish.

Verifying the McAfee Installation:
- Right-click the McAfee VirusScan system tray icon (a small "M" or "V") located on the bottom-right of your screen (the icon tray of the Windows task bar), and click on About VirusScan Enterprise.
- The pop-up window should read "VirusScan Enterprise + Anti-Spyware Module 8.7". This window is useful because it allows you to see when the McAfee anti-virus definitions were last updated. Definitions should be updated periodically to keep your computer current and protected against all kinds of malware (see the following section):

Updating McAfee Anti-virus Definitions:
Anti-virus definitions allow the anti-virus application to stay up-to-date and be able to detect and eliminate the latest malware threats. While McAfee 8.x Enterprise will update the anti-virus definitions (DAT files) automatically, it is recommended that you also periodically check for updates manually to keep you definition files current. To manually update both the McAfee Anti-Virus and the Anti-Spyware modules:
- Right-click the McAfee VirusScan system tray icon (a small "M" or "V") located on the bottom-right of your screen (the icon tray of the Windows task bar), then click on Update Now.
- The 'McAfee AutoUpdate' screen will come up and indicate that an update is in progress. Once the update is complete, click on Close (after 30 seconds the window will close automatically).

Running an "On-Demand" Virus Scan:
McAfee VirusScan will always be protecting your computer in the background, trying to detect and block incoming malware threats from files, internet downloads, web sites, etc. At the same time, it is highly recommended that you let McAfee do a manual scan of your computer to find and eliminate malware that may be hidden, dormant, or that may have been downloaded before you installed McAfee VirusScan. To do a manual, "On Demand," scan:
- Right-click the McAfee VirusScan system tray icon (a small "M" or "V") located on the bottom-right of your screen (the icon tray of the Windows task bar), then click on On-Demand Scan.
- The 'VirusScan On-Demand Scan Properties' window provides options to customize the virus scan. Verify that "All local drives" is listed under Item name, then click on Start to begin the virus scan.
- Any viruses detected during the scan will be listed as they are discovered in a table below the progress bar. Please be patient, as this process may take a while depending on your system's configuration.
- Once the virus scan is complete, review the results, then click on Close.
