Objective 7.6

Develop and implement a plan resulting in energy use reduction, recycling and green space preservation.

Reference to Previous Strategic Plans:  FSP 99. 1.2

ExCom Member:

CAO

Assessment Tool:

Campus benchmarks for recycling, energy savings, and water. Consumption is measured by:
Recycling: Energy:
Tipping receipts Electrical-Square D Power Logic
Oil-Gallon metering
Green space Gas-cubic feet metering
Present land inventory Water-New Britain water metering

Baseline:

Recycling Program (2008):
28% of the CCSU trash stream is recycled
95% of campus buildings had white paper recycle bins
Energy (fuel) Savings Program - CCSU Electrical Consumption
Report (2008):
Electrical - 29,126,083 kw used.
Oil - 25,000 gallons
Gas - 171,531 MCF
Water Reduction Program - CCSU Water Consumption Report
(2008) - 53,152,200
Green Space 15 Acres

Goal:

Increase recycled trash stream to 75%.
Maintain our current electrical 28,000,000 KW usage, our 23,000
gallon oil usage and 160,000 Gas MCF.
Gallon water consumption; (52,000,000).
An additional 9 acres of Green Space for a total of 24 acres.

Progress:

Recycling Program
40% (2012-13) of the CCSU trash stream is recycled
100% (2012-13) of campus buildings had white paper recycle bins
Energy (fuel) Savings Program - CCSU Electrical Consumption Report:
Electrical – 14,437,071 kw used (2012-13)
Oil – 1,129* gallons (2012-13)
Gas – 2,994,989 cu. ft. (2012-13)
Water Reduction Program - CCSU Water Consumption Report
40,482,675 gal (2012-13)
Green Space 18.1 Acres (2012-13)

Enabling Activities:

  • Continue to involve resident students in sustainability initiatives
  • Involve all students in sustainability initiatives
  • Pilot project using chemical free cleaning system in select campus buildings
  • Continue to conduct Sustainability Tours of the campus for the campus community and other professionals
  • Commencing a study for implementation of single stream recycling on campus
  • Installed waste collection systems (batteries and other electronic devices) throughout the campus to meet campus community disposal requirements
  • Initiated contract with Green Monster to manage disposal of campus electronics for major savings to the University
