In 1919, the University of Concepción was founded, becoming the first regional university in Chile. The university's founder and first president, Enrique Molina proposed that "this new University, in addition to professional education in liberal arts and technical sciences…will be a center of information for the public, outreach, scientific research and experimentation, and the promotion of best literary, humanist and philosophical culture."
