BSED-SECONDARY

  • The curriculum sheet for the BSED Secondary can be found here.

  • This major DOES require a minor, but the minor DOES NOT have to be one of the English dept. minors, although it may be. Note that the Writing for Teachers minor is no longer accepting new students.

  • Students should take ENG 298 early, ideally after they have taken a survey course or two but before they begin their upper-level courses.

  • On the curriculum sheets the courses students must have COMPLETED before applying to the professional program are NOT currently marked with an *. They are the four 200-level surveys, LING 200, Shakespeare (ENG 220, 461 or 462), and ENG 449.

  • Students who get lower than a “B” in these prerequisite classes should repeat them ahead of applying for the program.

  • Students need a 3.00 GPA in their subject area courses to apply to the program! If students have poor GPA’s consider advising them to repeat courses in which they received low grades. You should also be aware that there are alternative routes to the classroom— most notably a BA followed by our Post-Baccalaureate Certification Program. Mary Pat Bigley in the School of Ed. (2-2112) is an excellent resource for information of this sort.
