The God Beat: How to Report Fairly on Religious Claims, Oct. 8

Date: Tuesday - October 08, 2013
Time: 7:00 PM
Location: Memorial Hall, Constitution Room

Mark Oppenheimer, contributor to the New York Times Beliefs column, will speak about reporting on religion and handling religious claims for which there is seldom any evidence.

Normally, journalists require proof, like eyewitness accounts or reliable circumstantial evidence. However, when repeating religious claims, there is a tendency to say, "Mormons believe..." or "Jews believe..." without noting that there is scant evidence for such beliefs. Why do journalists do that? How should such claims be handled?

This event is free and open to the public.
