The CCSU Department of Music offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in a wide variety of music specialty areas.
We offer undergraduate degrees or concentrations in jazz studies, performance, theory/composition, and music education:
- Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), concentration in Jazz Studies
- Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), concentration in Performance
- Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), concentration in Theory/Composition

The CCSU Department of Music offers a master’s degree in music education. The Master of Science (M.S.) in Music Education degree program at CCSU provides certified music teachers advanced study and professional training beyond the baccalaureate degree. Candidates must apply to both the University and the Department of Music. The exit requirements for the M.S. in Music Education include a capstone project, such as a thesis, a solo recital, conducting an ensemble performance, or a composition. Students may complete the degree program in four summers. The Summer Music Institute (SMI) is the primary venue for our Masters degree program. SMI offers a unique blend of theory and practice, focus and versatility. Information about the courses offered each summer can be found at www.ccsu.edu/smi. CCSU is the only public university in the state of Connecticut to offer a music education certification option. Applicants are required to have completed a bachelor’s degree. This highly individualized program aligns with our undergraduate B.S. degree, and is tailored to the backgrounds and needs of each student.
