Literacy Essentials Conference Overview

Since 2007 the Department of Literacy, Elementary, and Early Childhood has hosted the Annual Literacy Essentials Conference.  With the goal of introducing CCSU students to top educators in the field, the conference continually attracts nationally and internationally recognized scholars and authors such as David Berliner, Nancy Carlson-Paige, Antonia Darder, Yetta Goodman, Don Leu, Ernest Morrell, Tom Newkirk, Tim Rasinski, Sharon Taberski, and Jacqueline Woodson.

The Literacy Essentials Conference further serves our students as it provides a forum for literacy professionals to come together and engage in professional conversations. It provides a venue for graduate students to share their research, to attend presentations and workshops on current research and effective classroom practices, to develop camaraderie with other graduate students, and to develop a professional network. The Literacy Essentials Conference also has become the first literacy conference our undergraduate students in Elementary Education attend.

While many of the attendees are CCSU students, the Literacy Essentials Conference also attracts teachers, school administrators, community partners, and alumni of the Reading and Language Arts programs. In recent years, the conference has also drawn presenters and faculty from universities and school districts outside of Connecticut.
