The Department of History at CCSU invites you to explore the variety of human experiences!

Encountering other times and other cultures helps us understand change and see the world from different perspectives.

Studying history helps us make sense of the modern world by understanding its complex origins and uncovering the lives and choices of people both well-known and forgotten. History encompasses all aspects of human thought and action in the past. We engage with diverse types of evidence and teach valuable skills in interpretation and analysis.

In addition, the study of the past fosters the skills and habits of the mind needed to excel in today’s world, both as an educated citizen and as a member of the economy.

The History Department at CCSU is comprised of faculty with a wide range of expertise who are committed to teaching and who regularly research and publish. We also work closely with community partners in Connecticut, and we house the Connecticut League of History Organizations and the Witness Stones Project in our department's office suite. Our units of study on nations and regions include Africa, the Ancient Near East, East Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, the South Pacific and North America. Our thematic and comparative approaches on topics range from gender, public history, politics, law, and indigenous peoples to specialized subjects such as epidemics and terrorism. Students have internship opportunities and complete a capstone their senior year that prepares them to launch in the professional world. Our graduate programs offer a traditional Master of Arts in History and a Master of Arts in Public History. Each year we offer a rich array of study options and we continually review and renew our curriculum.
