12th Annual Global Environmental Sustainability Symposium

12th Annual Global Environmental Sustainability Symposium /

Moving Towards Sustainable Transportation

Central Connecticut State University invites you to attend the 12th Annual Global Environmental Sustainability Symposium on Thursday, April 11, 2019. This full-day event is FREE and is attended by student, faculty, members of the general public, as well as researchers and practitioners. The theme of this year's symposium is: Moving towards sustainable transportation.

Transportation infrastructure is a critical element to economic growth that also shapes our cities and ultimately, how we live out our lives. The automobile-oriented system that has been built in the U.S. during the last century has stimulated growth, but often to the detriment of the people it was meant to serve, and the environment. Globally, transportation accounts for 14% of emissions, but in the U.S. it accounts for 26% of emissions (Source: EPA). In Connecticut, the impact of transportation is even higher than the national average, with 40% of statewide emissions generated by transportation (Source: CT DEEP). Despite many challenges, changes are afoot to alter this pattern across the world, and right here in our own region. This year's symposium will highlight the many successes, opportunities, and challenges to becoming more sustainable through our transportation and land use patterns.

The symposium coordinator for 2019 is Dr. Timothy Garceau. Questions can be directed to tgarceau@ccsu.edu.

Location

The Symposium will take place at Central Connecticut State University Student Center in Alumni Hall.
