The Geography Department provides many opportunities for study, interning, and networking. Below are student testimonials about the program and the opportunities associated with studying Geography at Central Connecticut State University.

Dominic Cwalinski on Interning at Town of Southington

I interned at the Town of Southington as a GIS Intern. I learned a lot about how a municipality functions and how GIS improves the operations of a local government.

The internship was great because I got to collect data outside of an office doing fieldwork and then apply my GIS knowledge to map making and analysis.

I interned as a program coordinator at Make-A-Wish CT where I assisted with granting children’s wishes. They rely heavily on interns which made it very hands on, fulfilling, and enjoyable!

After I graduate in May, I will be traveling to Madagascar as part of a volunteer program called International Volunteer HQ (IVHQ). The trip will be for about 12 weeks and during that time I will be scuba diving to help collect data on coral reefs for researchers that work to preserve and protect their habitat.

Studying Geography, especially GIS since what I will be doing is pretty much the frontlines of it all; has made me more and more excited to not only learn about the world but to go out and experience it first hand as well.
Jessica Lee on Interning at Southington Planning & Zoning Department

Quotation Mark

I am a geography major with a specialization in town planning. I had the opportunity to internship at the Town of Southington Planning & Zoning Department for 4 months. I had a fabulous experience. Not only did I learn a lot, but the workers I was surrounded with were phenomenal. My supervisor made sure I was treated appropriately and always doing quality work.

I was not stuck faxing papers or anything like that. I was involved with meetings, site plan reviews, inspections, and more. In addition, I had the chance to interact with the Building Department and see how their work connects with the Planning and Zoning. This was one of the best experiences I have ever had!

I chose to pursue my graduate degree in Geography at CCSU because of the flexibility of the program. I was able to customize my curriculum to focus on the aspects of Geography that would best suit my career goals. Now I'm working at a global firm as a Transportation Planner - just where I wanted to be.
Madison Wage on Interning at Rocky Mountain National Park

Quotation Mark

I am an interpretation intern at Rocky Mountain National Park for the Summer of 2019. I am one of three interns chosen to work [out of more than 90 applicants], and will be spending the summer teaching park visitors on the natural environment, habitats, and inhabitants of the park through interpretation lectures, tours, and visitor center help desks.

Quotation Mark

I will be helping members read maps, discover and navigate the park, as well as shadowing G.I.S. specialists in the NPS. I know I will enjoy this internship very much, and am excited to experience a summer in the National Parks!
