Drawing on best practices from the spring semester and with the health, safety, and educational goals of our students in mind, CCSU has invested nearly $2 million in technological upgrades in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
When campus closed down in March, the CCSU Information Technology team got to work that day to make sure the campus community stayed connected. From communication and online learning software to hardware rentals and support services, IT has been at the forefront of CCSU’s transition to a hybrid educational institution.

Development of HyFlex classrooms
The University has set up 34 classrooms, 4 lecture halls, and 29 labs/specialty spaces for HyFlex learning, which allows for proper social distancing for in-person students and instructors. New automated cameras will track instructors as they move around the room, and microphones embedded in the ceiling tiles deliver crisp audio for remote learners. Recording capability will allow all students to re-watch lessons at their convenience. Watch a demo here.
For students enrolled in lab classes, such as physics and dance, carts mounted with hi-tech audio and camera equipment can be moved throughout a space to provide remote learners with details and close-ups.
Enhanced faculty training on virtual and HyFlex teaching methods
The Center for Teaching and Faculty Development has been offering virtual training and support for new teaching technologies since the Spring 2020 semester. Training and professional development activities will continue throughout the Fall 2020 semester.
Online learning tools and tech support services
IT staff have provided students, faculty, and staff with virtual training sessions, expanded Held Desk services, and access to equipment and software since campus closed in March. Starting with its popular drive-up IT Trailer from which staffers allocated loaner hardware, the IT Department continues to offer new and updated services, software, and equipment as they are needed and become available and communicates regularly with the campus community about its service catalogue.
Campus-wide access to Webex Meeting software and Microsoft Teams has enabled many offices, departments, and centers to work remotely; offer virtual support and academic services; conduct appointments online; and much more. Student clubs and activities have launched virtual meeting options, and the addition of Telehealth allowed the Student Wellness Office to offer virtual counseling and support services. Expanded Wi-Fi hotspots will boost these services on campus.
Other safety upgrades
To limit physical contact between staff and students, new technology will be installed to create touchless entryways and create options for online ordering, cashless payments, and delivery.
