Your Health & Wellness

The health and safety of the campus community remains a priority for the Fall 2020 semester. Check out some of the work we’ve done on campus to combat COVID-19 and see what you can do to help.

New additions to campus

Throughout the summer, CCSU’s Facilities Management team worked long hours to plan and install new features on campus that will keep the campus community safe, healthy, and vigilant. Here are some highlights from the long list of health and safety accommodations that were successfully completed this summer. (Read the whole list in the full Blueprint Report.)

HVAC improvements: A $1 million investment in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment will increase fresh air in buildings.

Personal Protective Equipment: A steady supply of masks, hand sanitizer, and sanitizer wipes are available throughout campus.

Awareness education: Placement of visual reminders of our health standards throughout campus, plus planned reinforcement through training and education.

Touchless interaction: To limit physical contact between staff and students, new devices were installed to create touchless entryways and create options for online ordering, cashless payments, and delivery. PIN requirements on common doors will eliminate multiple people touching keypads.

Plexiglass protection: Plexiglass barriers have been placed in classrooms, administrative offices, serveries, and dining rooms.

Classroom design: Furniture was reconfigured or removed in classrooms to establish new capacities based on physical distancing requirements.

Cleaning supplies and expanded procedures: The Facilities Management Department is following disinfection and sanitization protocols recommended by the Connecticut Department of Public Health and the CDC. The supply chain for these products has been secure since May. These supplies enable the University to maintain the highest level of disinfection and sanitization.

Building entrances and classrooms are being equipped with hand sanitizers and disinfecting wipes. Disinfecting and cleaning products also will be available in bathrooms, common copy machine areas, and other shared facilities.

Daily disinfection will take place in all the buildings using a variety of manual and battery-operated sprayers including backpacks for large areas.

High-touch and hard-floor surfaces will be cleaned multiple times a day with professional-grade products. 

Blocks of time have been scheduled to clean classrooms between each class.

Wear a face mask. Everyone on campus must wear a face mask in all university buildings and outdoors when it is not possible to maintain a 6-foot distance from others. COVID-19 is primarily spread from person to person. You can become infected from respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. Masks may be removed to eat and drink. 

Face masks must cover the nose and mouth and have tension features that reasonably seal both the top and bottom of the mask (such as elastic loops). Bandanas, scarves, and stretched shirts are not acceptable face coverings.

Practice social distancing. Maintain 6 feet of physical space whenever possible. If you’re getting together with friends, meet outdoors when possible and keep the number of attendees to a minimum. Residential students should refer to their residence hall leaders for additional guidance on social distancing in common areas in the residence halls. (See the Res Life section for more guidance.)

Sharing is not caring. Please don’t share food, beverages, and other products that come in contact with your face (lip balm, straws, utensils, etc.) with others. Cover your coughs and sneezes. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or sneeze into your sleeve — not into your hands — then throw away the tissue into a lined trashcan and immediately wash hands.

Wash your hands often. Use soap and water and scrub for at least 20 seconds, especially after you have been in a public place, before eating or preparing food, or after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. See additional hand-washing guidance here.

Sanitize. If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60 percent alcohol. Cover all surfaces of your hands with sanitizer and rub them together until they feel dry.

Clean and disinfect. Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily. This includes tables, doorknobs, light switches, countertops, handles, desks, phones, keyboards, toilets, faucets, and sinks. If surfaces are dirty, clean them. Use detergent or soap and water before disinfecting surfaces.

Stay strong. Try to eat healthy well-balanced meals, exercise regularly, and get plenty of sleep. Avoid alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.

Mental health matters. You may experience increased stress during this pandemic. Fear and anxiety can be overwhelming and cause strong emotions. Share your concerns and how you are feeling with a friend or family member; maintain healthy relationships; and build a strong support system. Make time to unwind and remind yourself that strong feelings will fade. Try taking in deep breaths. Try to do activities you usually enjoy. If strong feelings persist, reach out to Student Wellness Services at (860) 832-1927.

Stay informed. Watch, listen to, or read news from reliable sources and for updates from officials. Be aware that there may be rumors during a crisis, especially on social media. Always check your sources and turn to reliable sources of information like your local government authorities. However, avoid information overload.

Be alert for symptoms. Watch for fever, cough, shortness of breath, or other symptoms of COVID-19. Take your temperature if symptoms develop, but don’t take your temperature within 30 minutes of exercising or after taking medications that could lower your temperature, like acetaminophen.

Report COVID-19 symptoms. If you begin to develop COVID-19 symptoms, contact the CCSU Contact Tracing Team immediately (phone number below), consult your medical provider, and/or request a COVID-19 test.

Remember: You can spread COVID-19 to others even if you do not feel sick.
