HyFlex & Remote Pathways

Class Formats

Over the summer, the university announced its decision to offer Fall 2020 classes online and in a HyFlex format as a safety precaution amid the continuing COVID-19 pandemic. HyFlex courses are delivered in person and broadcast online at the same time by the same faculty member (more details below). Approximately one-third of CCSU’s classes this fall will be offered in the HyFlex format. If pandemic conditions require campus to close again, HyFlex course instructors will be prepared to shift to an all-online format.

About Fall 2020 HyFlex classes

The HyFlex approach provides the traditional classroom experience to those who prefer that learning environment and allows students to practice social distancing as needed. This fall, HyFlex classes will be held in approximately 65 rooms across campus that have been measured for safe room occupancy to maintain appropriate social distance.

Approximately 14 students will attend Fall HyFlex classes in-person, on campus with the instructor; the rest of the class will attend live, online. The class will be recorded and available to students who miss class or need a refresher. Instructors will assign students additional work outside of the class meeting to compensate for the reduction of class time.

The duration of HyFlex classes will typically be reduced to 50 minutes in duration to create a 30-minute break for cleaning the room before the next class enters.

Watch Professor Kristine Larsen give a test run of a HyFlex classroom.

Important note: We are aware that some students who have both HyFlex and Online Synchronous classes (more on that below) may encounter a scheduling conflict. For example, when their on-campus class ends, they might have 25 minutes or less to return to their residence hall or home to attend an online class. To address this situation, we are expanding and improving Wi-Fi service throughout campus, including parking garages/lots. We are creating “pods” in the Student Center and other facilities to provide safe, quiet locations to participate in online classes.

About Fall 2020 online classes

Fully online classes will be offered in one of two formats: synchronously, meaning classes take place on a certain date and at a certain time; and asynchronously, meaning classes that do not meet on a specific date or at a set time.

Online Asynchronous classes: These classes meet fully online and do not meet at set times. You learn on your own schedule while meeting assignment due dates set by the instructor.

Online Synchronous classes: These classes meet fully online classes and the meeting time is scheduled for specific days and times (ex. M/W/F at 9 a.m.). Note: The instructor could determine that the class meets “live” fewer than the scheduled times through the semester and the rest of the class work is done asynchronously (at unspecified times or at times at the discretion of the student).

The duration of most 3-credit synchronous classes will be 75 minutes.
