In the rapidly changing field of education, teamwork, leadership, and support are more important than ever, according to a new book by Central Connecticut State University professor Dr. Jeremy Visone.

Visone’s book, titled “Empowering Teacher Leadership: Strategies and Systems to Realize Your School’s Potential” (Routledge; Jan. 6, 2022), offers practical strategies for teachers and school leaders to create and maintain supportive school cultures in which teachers become empowered leaders with shared administrative responsibilities.

Dr. Visone notes, “Principals, though critically important to student success, cannot and should not be the sole source of school leadership. In the most effective schools, leadership is distributed among many individuals, including teachers. Further, the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need for teacher voice and participation in leadership, given that the work of teachers has changed so dramatically, and they are the experts in this new reality.”

Educational leadership is a thriving area of study at Central Connecticut State University, and Dr. Visone, an assistant professor of Educational Leadership, Policy & Instructional Technology, draws from his own research and that of others to identify three foundational principles that can enhance educators' capacity for success and improve student outcomes — empowerment, collegiality, and risk taking. Dr. Visone’s strategies are applicable to any school setting, and he offers ways for educators to pay forward their empowered leadership by sharing their expertise with others.

Dr. Visone holds a Master of Education in Natural Sciences/Science Education and a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from Central. Prior to his tenure at Central, Dr. Visone was a teacher and building leader in the Newington Public Schools for 16 years. He also served as the principal of Anna Reynolds Elementary School, which was named a National Blue Ribbon School by the United States Department of Education in 2016.
