Telling HerStory: Dr. Laura Tordenti

Date: September 10, 2008      Time: 12:00 noon      Location: Women’s Center Lounge

Telling Her Story provides an opportunity for CCSU female students, staff, faculty and administrators to meet once a month to share their personal and professional successes.

Each month, a female member of the campus community is selected to speak about her work, her life and her challenges in an informal setting among fellow female students, faculty, staff and administrators. The goal of the series is to develop a supportive community for females on campus as well as develop mentoring relationships for new female students, staff, faculty and administrators.

 

Historically Black and Latino Sororities and Fraternities

Date: September 10, 2008  Time: 7:00pm                  Location: Semesters, Student Center

This event will introduce CCSU’s minority women and men to sororities and fraternities that address their concerns. It will focus on the effect of these organizations on the lives of minority women and men.

 

Health Talk for College Women          Topic: STDs, Birth Control & Contraceptives: All You Need To Know

Date: September 11, 2008      Time: 12:30pm      Location: Women’s Center Lounge

This informal monthly lunch hour discussion serves to educate college women on making choices to benefit their health. Topics will vary to cover relevant topics pertaining to women’s health. This is a collaboration with the Hartford GYN.

Girls Night Out! The Musical

Guest Speakers, Dr. Lori Wilson, MD, UCONN Assistant Professor of Surgery, Surgical Oncologist and Barbara Smith, Outreach Educator for St. Francis Hospital’s Connecticut Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (CBCCEDP)will discuss prevention and services available in addressing breast cancer.   Free and open to the public.  A light reception and free “goodie bags” and raffle tickets to the first 100 attendees.                                                                               Sponsors: Visiting Nurse Association of Central CT, African American Affairs Commission and CCSU Ruthe Boyea Women’s Center

Feminist Critique of the Porn Industry                                                                                  Date: November 5, 2008             Time: 2pm               Location: Philbrick Camp Room                Speaker: Estella Lopez of Stop Porn Culture, will discuss how the pornography industry grew to the astronomical figure of eight to ten billion dollars a year. This is more than Hollywood’s domestic box office receipts and more than twice as much as major league baseball. (Federal Bureau of Investigation, reported in Hancock, Sharon. "Women Fight Back Against Abuse,")  Pornography is the third largest revenue for organized crime in the United States just behind drugs and gambling.
