The objective of this policy is to create a dependable and secure wireless network for the CCSU campus community. Wireless networks use the same 2.4 GHz radio frequencies as other electronic devices such as wireless phones. This can cause interference and other obstructions. Precise planning is required to support the accomplishment of a successful wireless connection. A wireless network policy is needed to support the academic mission of the University and to regulate interference with the University's network infrastructure.

With the rapidly emerging popularity of wireless networking, IT has implemented an available wireless service free to the CCSU campus community. However, with a shared 2.4GHz frequency, there are some obstacles presented that will prevent the proper operation and maximum performance of this technology. Users must be aware of the potential negative effects of wireless devices.

Examples of wireless devices that may interfere with the wireless performance, especially with the 2.4 GHz bandwidth include (but are not limited to):

• 2.4 GHz Spread spectrum cordless phones
• 2.4 GHz consumer short distance wireless video links
• Wireless Ethernet Access Points including Apple Airport Base Station and the Macintosh computer operating as a software base station.
• Any computer operating in IEEE 802.11b Ad-Hoc mode
  

The wireless network is not designed to replace the wired network on campus, in residence halls, and in offices, but rather to supplement existing services. It is to be used by faculty, staff, and students; limited access is available to guests. The wireless network is based on the 802.11 standards and uses Cisco's Clean Access system to protect the network.

Mobility is the objective of CCSU's wireless network. It was not designed to replace physical Ethernet connections established on campus, residence halls and offices, but rather to augment existing services.

The wireless network has bandwidth limitations compared to the wired Ethernet. Applications that involve immense amounts of bandwidth, or are susceptible to deviating signal quality and strengths may not be suitable for wireless connections. Given that it is a controlled accomplishment and a shared resource, the following etiquette applies:

• Do not download large files over the wireless network.
• Do not stream video or audio (larger than 50 Kbps) over the wireless network.
