MINUTES - Friday, November 14, 2003

Ms. Taggart, Chairperson, called the meeting to order at 1:00 p.m.

F. Mendoza had no Budget Committee report but S. Sweeney, Associate Director of Student Activities/Leadership Development, acknowledged the need for the committee to review Account SBG900 purpose for next meeting.

Ms. C. Peppes gave the House Committee report on the trophy case consideration and passed around some samples.  She also reported that the committee discussed that specific bulletin board space is reserved for large organizations.  D. Orloske offered historical perspective that the Devil’s Den was scheduled in the past for banner use.

    To designate the East Wall of the Devil’s Den as a space for banner display with
    reservations made through the Student Center Scheduling Office.

      Motion Passed:    11-Yes    0-No       0-Abstained

Use of Lobby tables was discussed in regards to policy and ability.  Use of Lobby tables was discussed in regards to vendors.  T. Stubbs suggested club sponsors should be noted on a sign at the table.  A discussion of how to enforce posting a sign ensued.  SA/LD agreed to encourage clubs to note their sponsorship by a sign. 

D. Orloske asked what the compelling reasons would be to know the sponsors.  T. Stubbs said he would like to know who.   C. Taggart indicated she many not want to support certain groups. 

There was no Student Services Committee report.

Mr. Mendoza, president of Central Activities Network (CAN), then gave his monthly report.  Highlights: Recent attendance at the National Association for Campus Activities (NACA) conference; Elvira Kurt (comedienne), CAN Retreat in New Hampshire, Cinema Central attendance is way up, CAN Social at 8:30 p.m., Monday.

To ratify Bethany Liddell as secretary/treasurer of the Mosaic Center Committee for 2003-2004.

Mosaic Center Open House was a great success.  Mosaic Lens contest is at full throttle.  Judges have been selected from academic faculty.  Exhibit, speeches, and award will take place at on Wednesday, December 3, 6:30-9 p.m., on the Mezzanine of Alumni Hall. 

The Mosaic Center Committee has focused on structure and redecorating within the Center.  Plans are to purchase two new computers and a TV.  A new work-study student has been employed to help manage the office.

Programming for next semester includes:  A Campus of Difference™ program, a carnival co-sponsored with other cultural/ethnic student organizations, on-going discussions on multicultural programming or issues, providing a service for students to promote diversity on campus, and sponsoring events for designated culture months, i.e., Black History Month.

Association of College Unions International (ACUI):  Well attended conference great.  Student Center won first place in Swap Shop display.

National Association for Campus Activities (NACA):  The NACA Student Volunteer of the Year for the State of Connecticut was Fernando Mendoza.  Central was host school, so students had a role.

SUBOG promotional items pursuit is postponed until Christmas when C. Fenwick is back.

New Business:

College Bowl:  Question came up regarding why Central has not filled a team.  Ms. Taggart suggested that SUBOG fill a team and sponsor a competition.

CAN President F. Mendoza will investigate involvement with College Bowl.

The SUBOG Holiday Social is Tuesday, December 9.  The planning meeting will be next Wednesday, time TBA.  S. Chronister is the designated chairperson.

The next SUBOG meeting will be held on Friday, December 5, at 1:00 p.m., Student Center 1849 Room.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 2:00 p.m.
