Calling All BMS Majors Graduating in May 2005 or December 2005
The final review of your portfolio will take place at an exit interview on Tuesday, May 10. Please sign up for
one of the times listed on the sheet posted outside NC 204 (the BMS Department Office). Bring to this interview
all of your Student Portfolio materials: a current resume, an updated narrative statement, a recent copy of your
transcript, your completed (yay!) program sheet, abstracts/summaries of each semester’s independent research
work, and writing samples from one or more upper-level courses in the major. The interviews will take place in

Are You Planning to Apply to Medical, Dental, or Vet School This Summer?
The Pre-Health Committee will be conducting interviews in April of students applying to health professional schools. The purpose of the Committee
is to advise you in the application process and the write letters of recommendation. To sign up for an interview, please e-mail Dr Cheryl Watson,

IACUC Training
What's an iacuc? It's short for the Institutional Animal Care and Use Council, the group responsible for
overseeing all experiments using vertebrate animals at CCSU. They arrange yearly training sessions on animal
care. Attendance is required for faculty and students working with vertebrate animals in their research and
teaching. This year, the training will be March 10 from 3-4 pm; the location (a room in Copernicus Hall) will
be identified soon. If you think you need, or would like, this training, talk to one of the BMS faculty. (Posted March 2, 2005)
The Next Search Candidate
First of all, thanks to all of you students who are taking an active role in
the evaluation of the candidates for the new BMS faculty member. The next candidate
will be visiting Monday, March 7. Again, the candidate
will meet with students at 1:00 in Rm 311 (this time, we won't forget the donut
holes!), followed by a research seminar at 2:00 in Rm 155. (Posted March 2, 2005)
BMS is Getting Bigger!
To help take care of the all students joining the BMS department, we’ve gotten permission to hire a new faculty
member, who will begin teaching and research this Fall. We’re in the late stages of the hiring process, and now we
need student input before we make our final choice. Over the next three weeks, several candidates will be coming
to Central to meet BMS faculty and students. Each candidate will meet with students at 1:00 pm, and give a
research seminar at 2:00. The first candidate is coming on Monday, February 28, meeting with students in
NC 311, and giving a seminar in NC 155. Schedule information for the other candidates will appear here soon; for
details of the individual candidates, see the flyers posted around Copernicus. Students: get involved in
this decision! This person will be one of your instructors and research mentors, and you should take advantage

ECSC at CCSU!
This year’s Eastern Colleges Science Conference is being hosted by CCSU on April 8-9. The schedule and details
are available at the ECSC website. The Conference will be an opportunity for students to present the results of
their independent research projects, or just come and see presentations by students from Central and dozens of
other colleges in the Northeast. If you want to attend, please see Jim Mulrooney for registration details. We’re
also beginning to plan the staffing for this event, which will depend on lots of student volunteers. Students can
get involved through the Biology
Club, or by contacting any of the CCSU science faculty. (Posted February 25, 2005)
Scholarship Opportunities Open to Students in the School of Technology
Students, here's one more advantage to joining the Department of Biomolecular Sciences. There are
over a dozen scholarships limited to students in the School of Technology.

Students interested in Biomolecular Sciences or Biology are invited to join in the activities of the
Biology Club. There's a meeting
Wednesday, February 16 at 2:00 pm in 313 Copernicus Hall to plan for the upcoming Eastern Colleges Science
Conference, being held here at CCSU in April. Questions about the Club can go to the officers (Tom Pagliaruli
and Teresa Johnson) or the faculty advisor (Jim Mulrooney). Oh, you have a questions now? Will there be free
food at the Biology Club meeting on the 16th? Yes!
